ELI-NP project is implemented by Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), one of the most important public R&D organizations in Romania. The Institute is dedicated to the research and development in physical and natural sciences, mainly Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Engineering and related areas, operating several research infrastructures in this field.
ELI-NP will be the most advanced research facility in the world devoted to photonuclear physics, a new interdisciplinary research field which brings together, for the first time, the ability to study nuclear physics using high-power lasers and high energy photon radiation. The two main sources, which will be made available to the international users community, is a dual arm high intensity, ultra-short pulse laser system, able to reach intensities of 1023 W/cm2 and electrical fields up to 1015 V/m. Also, a γ radiation system, with tunable energy of the photons up to 19.5 MeV, spectral density above 103 ph/s/eV and ~ 0.5 % relative bandwidth.
